When Motherhood Feels Too Loud

July 02, 20262 min read

Overstimulation isn't a character flaw. It's your nervous system asking for a moment to breathe."

Motherhood can be wonderful, joyful… and incredibly loud. Not just physically, but mentally too.

The constant questions. The background noise. The mental to-do list. The feeling that everyone needs something from you. Eventually, your nervous system reaches a point where it quietly says:

“I’ve had enough.”

The problem is that many mums interpret that feeling as failure.

“Why am I so irritable?”

“Why can’t I cope?”

“I should be more patient.”

But what if you’re not failing at all? What if your nervous system is simply asking for a pause?

Overstimulation isn't weakness.

One of the biggest mindset shifts for me was realising that feeling overstimulated doesn’t mean I love my son any less. It doesn’t mean I’m a bad mum. It means I’m human.

When your nervous system is constantly processing noise, movement, conversations, decisions and responsibilities, it eventually becomes overwhelmed.

That’s biology. Not failure.

Small pauses matter.

We often think self-care has to be a spa day. Sometimes it’s simply:

  • stepping into another room for thirty seconds

  • taking three slow breaths

  • making a cup of tea without rushing

  • letting your shoulders drop

Tiny moments can help your nervous system feel safe again.

Stop judging yourself.

The moment you notice you’re feeling overwhelmed, try replacing judgement with curiosity.

Instead of asking:

“What’s wrong with me?”

Ask:

“What does my nervous system need right now?”

That one question changes everything.

A gentle reminder.

You don’t need to be perfectly calm to be a good mum. You simply need to keep coming back to yourself when life feels loud.

Some days that might take five minutes. Some days it might take longer. Both are okay.

If your mind has been feeling particularly loud lately, I've created a workbook called A Gentle Reset to help you slow down and reconnect with yourself one page at a time.
